GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Six months after they united in marriage, a husband allegedly gunned down his wife in their Grand Rapids home as she tried to escape through a bedroom window.

The woman, Alicia Danielle Lofton, had served her husband, Marcus Lofton, with divorce papers just one day prior to being killed.

Marcus Lofton, 43, is on trial this week at the Kent County Courthouse for his wife’s slaying. He’s charged with open murder and felony firearms.

Family and friends of the slain woman jammed one side of the gallery in Judge Scott Noto’s courtroom as testimony got underway Monday, May 19.

The couple’s relationship was rocky, and the husband and wife often argued, Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Angela Curtis told the 12-person jury.

The case started on the morning of Aug. 17, 2023, when Grand Rapids police responded to a home at 1411 Union Ave. SE for a report of shots fired. Officers found Alicia Lofton dead on the ground next to a house.

She was shot 15 times with bullets striking her in the back of the head, shoulder and thigh, an autopsy determined. Kent County’s medical examiner ruled her manner of death a homicide.
