MI senator’s wife accused of embezzling over $35K from St. Clair County chamber of commerce

Kellie Lauwers, the wife of Michigan Sen. Dan Lauwers, has been charged in connection with allegedly embezzling more than $35,000 from a chamber of commerce in St. Clair County, officials said.
The 64-year-old Yale woman has been charged with one count of embezzlement by an agent or servant, $20,000 or more but less than $50,000 and one count of using a computer to commit a crime, according to a release from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office. Both charges are felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
The charges stem from her time as the treasurer of the Yale Chamber of Commerce from 2019 to February 2025.
During that time, Kellie Lauwers allegedly embezzled $35,200 from the organization.
Michigan State Police handled the investigation into Kellie Lauwers.
She is expected to be arraigned in 72nd District Court in Port Huron, though a hearing date has not yet been scheduled, officials said.
