A Hazel Park man accused of strangling his 21-year-old friend, mutilating her body and stashing it in an attic is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation before returning to court in July.

Police say Jordan McClanahan, 23, allegedly wrapped a belt around Jessica Leigh White’s neck to kill her and then removed her fingertips with a belt cutter, Fox 2 Detroit reported after a previous court hearing. Authorities initially said the two were platonic friends, but White’s mother Karen White told People magazine that he’d had an obsession with her daughter, according to the article.

McClanahan had previously been scheduled for a preliminary examination Tuesday but is now set to appear at 10 a.m. July 15 in Hazel Park District Court, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor. An evaluation is underway to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.
